This book is hard bound in a limited edition of 1000 copies, and has been designed by José Parlá and Iain Cadby and compiled by Fiona McKinnon.
The most beautiful and comprehensive study of José Parlá's work to date, it contains 83 full colour images across 140 pages and accompanied his solo show ADAPTATION / TRANSLATION held at Elms Lesters in October / November 2008
Structured into sections which explore different areas of José's methodology and practice, it covers his research/ documentary photography from his travels, previously unpublished works, and concludes with a catalogue of works from his Elms Lesters solo show - Adaptation / Translation.
With a foreword by author and collector Saeb Eigner and essay by curator Michael Betancourt
A book of this size and complexity had to be signed off at the printers in plenty of time - So in order to include EVERY painting in the exhibition, including those painted by José whilst in residence at Elms Lesters in the final weeks preceding the exhibition, we designed a wallet at the back of the book into which we slipped two large format foldout double-sided illustrations (measuring 55 x 44cm each), as well as two double-sided printed cards ('DANCE, DANCE, DANCE' measuring 17.5 x 27.5cm and 'THE FONTAINEBLEU PENIT' measuring 22 x 22cm) These cards show both the painted canvas side, as well as the reverse of the stretcher, with the painting title, date and signature : )
